It is often easier for a doctor to prescribe us a pill or potion to treat our health symptoms instead of dealing with the root problem. Why? Because they can't make us take the necessary steps to correct it. We often demand instant answers and are not willing to take responsibility for our own health. I can understand the frustration of the medical profession since I deal with it as a fitness coach, too. I can encourage, cajole, and educate my clients to exercise and make better choices. However, I can't force them to actually put forth the effort. They have to want to themselves.
So many of the health problems affecting people today can be influenced by making the choice to exercise. Diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, and even depression are all improved simply by adding more activity into our lives. It is such a simple thing. Why then is it so hard to begin? We have many excuses. It boils down to physics. A body at rest tends to stay at rest. A body in motion tends to stay in motion. The key is to start moving!
Running is a simple exercise that doesn't require an expensive gym membership, fancy equipment, or special classes. You only need some decent shoes and to step out your door. Set small goals at first. If you haven't exercised in months (or years) begin by walking the first month and gradually add running into your walks. Aim for 30 minutes at least 5 days a week the first month. It doesn't take long for you to notice you feel better. You'll find you have more energy and, as long as you don't push too hard at first, less stiffness. I felt younger and often tell people exercise is the true fountain of youth.
There will be days that you don't feel like going for a run. You will have to play tricks on yourself to get your body in motion and fight the principle of inertia. I have those days myself. Tell yourself you'll only go one mile and then you can head home. After a mile you will be feeling better and able to complete your workout most of the time. It feels like such an accomplishment when you finish! You will find the health problems disappearing if you will stick with it. More exercise can reduce or eliminate the medications you are having to take. Less medicine means less money being spent on health care, and more money available for other things. Like those new running shoes.
Rediscover the younger, healthier person inside. Go outside and play!
