The Achilles tendon is a cord like structure that connects your heel to the muscles of the lower leg - your calf muscles. Leg muscles are the most powerful muscle group in the body and the Achilles tendon is the thickest and strongest tendon in the body. It is estimated that 11% of all running injuries accounts for this condition.

What causes this condition?

This part of your body has a fairly limited range of motion. It can get overworked pretty easily, to make matters worse blood flow to the area is very poor, so it takes a while to get loosened up. If you have the tendency to overpronate, you will be more susceptible to Achilles tendonitis. It can also be caused by wearing too tight or inflexible running shoes that may coerce the Achilles to twist and develop an injury

The symptoms

If you have a dull or sharp pain anywhere along the back of the tendon, you definitely have this injury, because nothing else causes sharp pain in that area. The pain which can also be a burning sensation, will be anywhere from an inch above your heel to the bottom of your calf. In bad cases you will be able to see how inflamed the tendon is, because it will be visibly swollen compared to your healthy Achilles tendon.

the treatment

If you have Achilles tendonitis you should ice the entire area and take relative rest. You can also take anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen. You should also Limit your weekly mileage and adding stretching may prevent Achilles tendonitis from becoming painful and chronic. You may even take a look at your running form, running shoes or any contributing element that can cause this injury. also doing some Eccentric calf raises can be very effective at eliminating and treating most of these injuries.
