The sense of achievement that comes from attaining a goal comes from dopamine (a neurochemical). To get your regular fix, have manageable goals that will give you more opportunities for success.
Check out quotes from the top performers in athletics or road running, and any body else that really inspires you.
You will find that these quotes when exercising will pop into your head, usually when you need that extra bit to get through a really tough training session.
Monitor Your Mood
Compare your mood before and after a run on a scale of -5 to +5. The one end being totally stressed and cranky and the top end calm and elated.
If you start out feeling at lets say +1, you know that when you are finished you'll be a +4 or 5. if you are like me you feel cranky if you can't go for a run.
Use Positive Imagery
Stick pictures of those people that have really excelled in their sport on your fridge. Like Lance Armstrong (yes I know he is a cyclist) for example, who has excelled against huge odds.
I know of a guy who puts a rubber band around his wrist each time he goes out and trains. After training he adds it to his rubber band ball. He takes his rubber band ball to races with him to remind him of how hard he's trained for the race.
Make your runs pleasurable and you will soon see an improvement in your performance and you will be a pleasure to run with.
