Beginning runners are usually prepared for their first 5 or 10k after two months of running every other day, and having completed one run that is the distance of the race.
The most common mistakes beginners make in their first race
Mostly they start to fast and then up struggling towards the end. The bottom line is that you can't start too slow in your first race. Practice your super slow start by beginning all of your runs super slow.
Also during one of your runs per week, experiment with different ratios of walk breaks. For example, walking one minute every five minutes for a 10k, this will keep you fresh during the race and give you the energy for a strong finish.
Don't be afraid to walk during a race, sure lots of people will go past you but you will catch them near the end and have the last laugh.
Mostly set achievable targets. You know what you are capable of so set a goal time that's achievable. And when you make it the celebrations can begin.
I know here in South Africa most people start running because they want to run the Comrades Marathon, the worlds biggest ultra and a grueling test over 89kays.
That's great but you still need to start at the beginning, doing the shorter races will also get you accustomed to racing and you will know what to expect when you go for that marathon or maybe even the Comrades.
One thing goes without question; it's hard to top the feeling of crossing the finishing line of your first race no matter what the distance.
I have raced over all distances and have completed probably one of the toughest ultra marathons in the world, the Comrades Marathon.
