The people that generally say that running is bad for you because of the high impact on your bones and joints are mostly too lazy to do any exercise, and so use this excuse.
Running injuries are mainly caused when a runner fails to warm up properly or attempts to increase their mileage drastically over a short period of time.
Running in the wrong or worn out running shoes can also lead to injury, however to imply that the high impact nature of running causes injury is totally incorrect.
High impact activities such as running actually help to increase bone mass, thus improving bone health. Also numerous studies have concluded that running does not increase the risk of joint disease and osteoarthritis, even after many decades of participating in the sport.
There are many different views as to what the maximum distance a runner should run in one go before running negatively impacts on the body. These range from as little as 10 kilometers to over one hundred kilometers.
However physiologists agree that humans were built to run. So when we run with proper form and a decent pair of running shoes, our bodies are not torn down but strengthened with each kilometer that we log. Of course there are also the psychological benefits as well.
So when you hear someone say that running is bad for you. Please give them the correct facts and maybe share the benefits of running with them, because as you well know the positives far outweigh the negatives.
