Motivation is the key to successful and permanent running program. This concept holds different meanings to different runners. For me, it means working towards achieving something, and at the same time, it is the impetus is to get away from something.
The unconscious motivation strategy
Of course, I didn't come up with this definition alone. In fact, the human nervous system is pre-programmed from the factory to motivate us by moving towards what we want (pleasure) and away from what we don't want (pain). Your nervous system is already doing this 24 hour per day and 7 days a week, whether you think about it or not.
Therefore, this strategy is intuitive and unconscious. You don't have to do any thing to make it work. As a result, we all can tap into it and use it to our advantage. Just imagine if you could take control over this innate power. Such drive comes without exertion or intention.
The toward VS the away from
Everyone uses this strategy differently. Some are totally towards-they are always trying to achieve something. Others are always running on the away from-meaning that they are trying to avoid what they don't want. The best way to use this strategy is to use both directions at the same time
Who are you?
Now it's time for you to figure out your preferred strategy. Think about your motivation and identify its source. Ask yourself the following questions: "what is important to me when running? Make a full list, when you think you have come to the end of the end, ask yourself these questions again often there are more answers than you think!
- What specific results you want to achieve when running?
- What specific consequences you want to avoid?
- Which state motivates you the best? The carrot or the stick?
When you have it figured out, notice if you are using both direction on an equal manner. If not, do your best to use them both at the same time.
