Proper running form plays a large role in how safely and efficiently a runner exercises. All runners' bodies vary slightly from each other, so there is no such thing as a "one-size-fits-all", perfect running technique. Nonetheless, there are several general principles of running technique that should be understood and implemented by all who seek to benefit from their running regimen.

The stride is, perhaps, the most important aspect of a perfect running technique. Depending on the style and length of a run, a stride will lengthen or shorten, and the knees will either increase in height or lower and soften. Shorter distances, especially sprints, will require the runner to increase the length of the stride, as well as drive the knee higher and further in front of the runner's body. Long distance runners, on the other hand, wish to conserve as much energy as possible-they accomplish this by decreasing knee height and shortening the length of the stride.

Little attention is given to the shoulders and arms, a primary energy-expending source during a run. Even experienced runners make the mistake of carelessly swinging their arms across their body or tightening their shoulders. In order to achieve the perfect running technique, shoulders should be relaxed and even across the back. Arms should rest at 90º angles and swing from the front of the body to the back of the body, rather than crossing each other in front of the chest. This removes excess strain to the core and allows the runner to propel himself further and with more momentum.

The exceptions being the arms and legs, perfect running technique would include the lack of tension or movement from the back, waist, and head. To achieve the proper posture during a run, the back should remain flat and straight with as little necessary tension as possible. The head should be up and centered, with eyes looking forward-looking down adds too much stress to the neck.

These are only a few general guidelines on how to achieve and utilize a perfect running technique. If you still have more questions, or would like more information pertaining to running and how to begin the right way, check out this great running guide.
