Is a Generic Training Plan Right For Me?

So you signed up for your first sprint triathlon or your first half marathon and now you are wondering how to best prepare. What training should you follow and how will you make sure you are in top shape? You decide to go on line to search out a training program and quickly realize there are hundreds of options to choose from. Which one is best for you?

If you are looking for the best results, choose a program that is specifically designed for you. We are all different and posses varying levels of experience so it is crucial to search out a training program that is based on your individual training backgrounds. This will ensure that the training is challenging enough to provide a training stimulus but not so challenging that it send you over the edge. I caution against generic training plans because they are not designed with you as an athlete in mind. If you are a former college basketball player in your mid thirties your training should look vastly different from a fifty year old with no sports background at all.

There are varying levels of customization and the more feedback and interaction you get from a coach, the more you will pay for this interaction. If you are a new athlete, you most likely will not need a highly customized program. At a minimum, I would suggest a program that requires you to submit a training background questionnaire before your program is designed. More experienced athletes will benefit from a program that allows for modifications throughout your training which are based on how well you recover and progress.

If you are going to invest the time to prepare for your next race, make sure that you put some thought into training. If you decide to search for a triathlon or running coach, make sure they offer programs built around your needs and training background. Never pay for a generic template training plan that anyone can download.
