Why Your Running Shorts Should Have Pockets

Maybe you're a trail runner, or maybe you prefer hard pavement and long marathons. Perhaps you're a gym rat who likes the indoor feel of a treadmill. Whichever kind of runner you are, you should choose running shorts with pockets for ease, comfort and safety.

Running shorts with pockets - and not just the pockets of yesteryear that were big enough to hold only one small key - are essential to today's runner. Today, runners want more versatility from their shorts, and that means the ability to carry their iPods and MP3 players, license and credit cards, and most importantly, nutritional items. Pockets for nutritional packets and/or energy gel packs can be extremely beneficial if you're out on a long-distance run. Or running your first marathon! Running shorts that offer a variety of pocket sizes are really a plus because some items may fit in one pocket better than others. Finally, mesh pockets which are stretchable will conform with the item you are carrying and keep it snug to your body without bounce.

When shopping for running shorts with pockets, look for those with a wider waistband (more than 1 inch to provide greater support) with integrated pockets sewn higher up on the short to help reduce bouncing.

When choosing long-distance running shorts with pockets, look for:

  • Moisture-wicking fabric that helps to draw sweat and moisture away from your body

  • A variety of pocket sizes that work well for various kinds of runs. For longer runs, you may load up several pockets or even 5-7 of the pockets with sunscreen, sunglasses and nutritional gels. This can alleviate the burden of wearing fanny packs or belts that often bounce or twist. For shorter runs, you may only need a place for your hotel card key, a small map, and your iPod.

  • A soft, yet supportive interior lining. The lining allows you to not wear underwear or a jock strap, and can help prevent chafing.

  • Shorts specifically designed for men or women. Men and women are built differently and need running shorts designed for their body style.
