Have you decided the time has come to get off the couch and start exercising, but aren't sure if running is the right choice for you? Here are five running tips to answer some common questions asked by beginners:
How fast do I need to run?
At the beginning, you will benefit most from running at a slow, easy pace. This is called "conversational pace" because it allows you to run and still carry on a conversation at the same time. That's quite a slow pace.
You don't want to go too fast because you are just starting out. You want to develop a good base of strength and endurance first. That's the secret to running for a long time without injury. Once you have a good base in place, then you can start working on speed, if that's what you want to do.
How far do I need to run?
A beginner needs to think in terms of how long to run, not how far. You want to develop the habit of running regularly for a certain number of minutes. How far you go during that time doesn't matter in the slightest.
A good beginner running program can guide you along the way. For example, you can start with fifteen minutes of alternating running and walking. Then you gradually work up to half an hour over a period of a few weeks. There are many good beginner running programs available online.
Can I stop and rest while out running?
Most beginner programs are designed to alternate running with walking. So yes, you can stop running and walk for awhile when you need to, then resume running again. It's good, though, to keep walking and not sit down unless absolutely necessary.
As your program progresses, you will find that it's easier to run a bit more and walk less. You will be surprised how steadily your body will adapt!
Must I buy special clothes or shoes?
If you have some comfortable sneakers, some old pants or shorts, and a shirt, you are ready to head out the door and run! Those are plenty to get you started.
But if you find that you want to continue running, then you should consider the purchase of a good pair of running shoes. Good shoes are very important, not only for your comfort, but for your safety and to avoid injuring your feet. At that point, you should go to a store that specializes in running shoes, where they can evaluate your foot type and match you with the correct type of shoes.
What else do I need to know before starting?
If you feel any type of pain while running, then stop! Running is not supposed to hurt. See your physician if you have any concerns about starting a running program. It's best to be safe instead of sorry!
